Congratulations to Eileen Drepaul Weisner and Annie Gombiner, Valedictorian and Salutatorian of New Rochelle High School’s Class of 2024.
Valedictorian Eileen Weisner was named a National Merit semifinalist in September, putting her among the top students in the nation. Last year, she received the Yale Book Award from the Yale Westchester Alumni Association for high academic achievement, upright character, and demonstrated leadership ability.
Eileen attended a small private middle school and chose to attend New Rochelle High School over a private high school.
“While COVID put a damper on my freshman year, I'm glad I chose to come here. I'm continually impressed by the breadth of classes available, and very satisfied with the level of education. All my teachers have been engaging and supportive, and so have my classmates.”
“I'd especially like to thank Ms. (Carmen) Glenn, who was a calming presence during my hectic junior year,” she said, adding a shout out to Ms. Glenn who teaches AP Environmental Science, “Thanks for continuing to lend me your ear (and your room)!”
A talented athlete, Eileen has been a member of the varsity softball team since freshman year and plays singles on the varsity tennis team. During the summers, she teaches sailing to kids.
She is president of the high school’s Book Club and vice president of the National English Honor Society and is a member of the Social Studies Honor Society and the high school’s Envirothon chapter, an academic competition club. She was on the Envirothon team that won the regional award for Aquatic Ecology last year. Eileen has been teaching religious education in her parish on Sundays for the past five years.
In her free time, she enjoys reading, crocheting, and watching Jeopardy and MLB games.
Eileen has yet to settle on a college of choice but plans to major in the humanities and then attend graduate school for law or business.
“I’d also like to give a shout out to my parents,” she said. “Especially my mom: thank you for your love and endless encouragement! None of this would've been possible without you.”
Salutatorian Annie Gombiner was named a National Merit Commended Scholar earlier this year and received the Smith College Award for academic excellence, extracurricular participation, and commitment to community service last year.
She also has an impressive list of extra-curricular interests. She is the Editor-in-Chief of New Rochelle High School’s newspaper, “The Huguenot Herald,” and writes the column “Humans of New Rochelle '' where she profiles the life stories of New Rochelleans. A Girl Scout, Annie achieved her Gold Award last August, founding Words to the Wise, an intergenerational social group. She is also the president of CommuniTeen Tutors, a free, student-led tutoring organization.
Annie is a violinist in the PAVE program, the president of Tri-M Music Honor Society, and a volunteer violin teacher at Songcatchers. Additionally, she volunteers for the special needs programming at the JCC of Mid-Westchester, is the treasurer for the Chinese Honor Society, a member of the National Honor Society, and an Ignite mentor.
She has a strong interest in government and law. She attended the Students Inside Albany Conference and the Southern District of New York Justice Institute earlier this year and serves on State Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins’ Youth Advisory Council.
“New Rochelle High School has provided me with exceptional opportunities to learn and connect with my community,” she said, adding, “I am so grateful for all my teachers at New Rochelle High School, particularly Ms. Stancarone, Ms. Glenn, Mr. Hedman, Mr. Wood, Mr. McIvor, and Ms. Huang, as well as my guidance counselor, Ms. Mayer. They have all been incredibly supportive and encouraging.”
With her college plans yet to be finalized, Annie anticipates studying history or American Studies, with an eye to working in government or as a public interest attorney.

La Valedictorian Eileen Weisner fue nombrada semifinalista de Mérito Nacional en septiembre, colocándola entre los mejores estudiantes del país. “Si bien COVID frenó mi primer año, me alegro de haber elegido venir aquí. Estoy continuamente impresionada por la variedad de clases disponibles y muy satisfecha con el nivel de educación. Todos mis maestros han sido interesantes y me han apoyado, al igual que mis compañeros de clase”.

Eileen, una atleta talentosa, ha sido miembro del equipo universitario de softbol desde el primer año y juega individuales en el equipo universitario de tenis. Durante los veranos, enseña navegación a niños.
Es presidenta del Club de lectura de la escuela secundaria y vicepresidenta de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor de Inglés y es miembro de la Sociedad de Honor de Estudios Sociales y del capítulo Envirothon de la escuela secundaria, un club de competencia académica. Formó parte del equipo Envirothon que ganó el premio regional de Ecología Acuática el año pasado. Eileen ha estado enseñando educación religiosa en su parroquia los domingos durante los últimos cinco años.
En su tiempo libre, le gusta leer, hacer crochet y ver partidos de Jeopardy y MLB.
Eileen todavía tiene que decidirse por una universidad de su elección, pero planea especializarse en humanidades y luego asistir a una escuela de posgrado en derecho o negocios.
“También me gustaría felicitar a mis padres”, dijo. “Especialmente mi mamá: ¡gracias por tu amor y aliento infinito! Nada de esto hubiera sido posible sin ti”.
La Salutatorian Annie Gombiner fue nombrada Académica Nacional al Mérito a principios de este año y recibió el Premio Smith College por excelencia académica, participación extracurricular y compromiso con el servicio comunitario el año pasado.
También tiene una lista impresionante de intereses extracurriculares. Con sus planes universitarios aún por finalizar, Annie prevé estudiar historia o estudios americanos, con miras a trabajar en el gobierno o como abogada de interés público.
