IEYMS students recently met with two New Rochelle City Council members. Yadira Ramos-Herbert (District 3), who was just elected New Rochelle Mayor, and Martha Lopez-Hanratty (District 1) met with students twice for interactive sessions in which the students gained a greater understanding of local government, upcoming city initiatives, and avenues for civic engagement.
Organized by IEYMS Humanities Chairperson, Dr. Beatrice Lopez, the interactive sessions gave the students an opportunity to articulate their concerns and priorities in the ongoing development and growth of their city. They presented their claims on matters they believe should be at the forefront of the city government's resource allocation. Supporting their positions with research and sound reasoning, and in some cases prepared proposals, the students advocated for affordable housing, environmental conservation, and health and safety.
"I learned a lot about how our government functions,’ said sixth grader Natalie Martinez. “It was interesting to meet the city council members and see how they intend to enhance New Rochelle."
Council member Ramos-Herbert was impressed with the students’ interest. "It was inspiring to engage with the future leaders of our community. Their insightful questions and analytical skills were a pure joy to witness. With our dedicated teachers and hardworking students, I am confident that New Rochelle's future is exceedingly bright.”
“In light of the enriching experience, our students have expressed a strong desire for this learning opportunity to become an annual event, demonstrating their eagerness to continue engaging with local government and fostering their role as active, informed citizens in the development of their city,” said Dr. Lopez.
Los estudiantes de la escuela Intermedia Isaac E. Young se reunieron recientemente con dos miembros del Concejo Municipal de New Rochelle. Yadira Ramos-Herbert (Distrito 3), quien acaba de ser elegida alcaldesa de New Rochelle, y Martha López-Hanratty (Distrito 1) se reunieron con los estudiantes dos veces para sesiones interactivas en las que los estudiantes obtuvieron una mayor comprensión del gobierno local, las próximas iniciativas y avenidas de la ciudad para el compromiso cívico.
Organizadas por la Cátedra de Humanidades de IEYMS, la Dra. Beatrice López, las sesiones interactivas brindaron a los estudiantes la oportunidad de articular sus inquietudes y prioridades en el desarrollo y crecimiento continuo de su ciudad. Presentaron sus reclamos sobre asuntos que creen que deberían estar a la vanguardia de la asignación de recursos del gobierno de la ciudad. Apoyando sus posiciones con investigaciones y razonamientos sólidos y, en algunos casos, propuestas preparadas, los estudiantes abogan por viviendas asequibles, conservación del medio ambiente y salud y seguridad.
"Aprendí mucho sobre cómo funciona nuestro gobierno", dijo Natalie Martínez, estudiante de sexto grado. "Fue interesante conocer a los miembros del concejo municipal y ver cómo pretenden mejorar New Rochelle".
La miembro del consejo Ramos-Herbert quedó impresionada con el interés de los estudiantes. "Fue inspirador interactuar con los futuros líderes de nuestra comunidad. Fue un verdadero placer presenciar sus preguntas perspicaces y sus habilidades analíticas. Con nuestros dedicados maestros y estudiantes trabajadores, estoy segura de que el futuro de New Rochelle es sumamente brillante".
